Congratulations to Elke Behrens for starting the New Year by gracing the cover of “The Monthly” a prominent Bay area magazine.  Her mixed media collage on canvas is titled “Let there be Peace” and represents a child entering the world.  It is a beautiful choice for the January cover.

Elke B. Cards & prints, along with original paintings of Elke Behrens are proudly displayed for sale in the 4th St. Studio.  Elke B. Cards is a company started by Elke’s daughter, Liza Sanchez, and partner Heather Barber.  Their products are very popular.  Elke created the images specifically for their card and print line.

Other artists who have made The Monthly covers this year are Debbie Claussen, Kim Bass & Gail Machlis.  Posters of The Monthly covers can be purchased at http://www.themonthly.com

From the inside cover of The Monthly, January 2009 Issue:

Let There Be Peace (mixed media), was inspired by artist Elke Behrens’ hope and enthusiasm for the new administration. Born in Germany “under much different circumstances,” Behrens says she rejoices in how far the world has come. The artist’s love of painting has inspired her extensive international travel and exposure to the world’s rich art history. Behrens says these experiences have helped to shape her “weltanschauung,” or world philosophy and guided her artistic sensibility. Behrens turned to painting after suffering several significant personal losses. Now she rarely spends a day without painting. Her images are often whimsical with a child-like simplicity and contrasting depth. Her paintings are densely layered and covered with a mesh of vivid colors and graffiti or scratched images.
